Death and denial
Do you realize how much denial you have to use to get through an average day without losing your mind? Every old person, every car-crash, every homeless lunatic, every news story about cancer you encounter is a reminder of your future: The fast savage death, the slow slide into decrepitude, the squalid slide into decrepitude, suffering and death and brutal kicks to the ego all the way. But none of it bugs you does it? Not enough to keep you from functioning. You ever think that maybe it should? That maybe it would be perfectly reasonable for you to be crippled by terror and despair?
You have to pretend, to simply silence the horror, to close your eyes to it and distract yourself with work and pastimes to keep from letting it in.
